Brush and Rinse

A toothbrush can redirect water from a faucet to your lips for easy rinsing. Brushing and rinsing is an oral care routine that we all perform at least once everyday. At this point, no one should be using disposable cups for rinsing is an oral care routine that we all perform at least once everyday. At this point, no one should be using disposable cups for rinsing after brushing. No one should have to wash a glass or cup every time they rinse. No one should have to lap water from his or her hand. No one should be forced to slurp excess water from toothbrush bristles. Current methods of getting water into our mouths for rinsing after brushing are sloppy, create waste, and place unnecessary stress on our bodies. And, people love water fountains.

Lui Honfay – MONO MP3 Player

Posted by py on 11.20.07 | Permalink | 1 Comment

mono-banner-web.JPG

MONO is conceptually a Bluetooth MP3 player, which employs minimalist approach. Basically there are two main components in the design: the main storage unit and the receiver unit with earphones. When not in use, the main unit is a fascinating, clean box made of aluminium alloy with thorough hairline finish. There is no visible buttons at the exterior. With the use of geometry of squares, the main unit is turned on by simply rotating the 2 planes, hence revealing the control buttons.

mono-01-web.JPG

It is built with a form and size that sits easily in the hand and in the pocket (80mm x 80mm x 17mm thick). The receiver unit is connected to the main unit via Bluetooth. Similarly, the volume in the receiver unit is controlled by rotating the two smaller squares. This volume control is expressed like a fashion accessory, which the user wears like a necklace and the earphones are connected from behind. This relieves the stress on the user’s ears, unlike convectional earphone whereby the earphones are constantly pulled from the front. Audio files transfer is done via USB and the unit is charged with built-in lithium-ion battery. The result is a gorgeous, sleek and sexy design that is unrivalled by other MP3 players.

Awards:

1. International Red Dot Concept Award for Product Design Winner for MP3 design MONO
2. Young Asian Designers Award 2005 (YADAY 05) Best in Product Design
3. International Lite-On Electronic product Competition (Merit)

About the Designer

Lui Honfay is architecturally-trained, currently working full-time as an architect. Though he has serious passion for architecture, he constantly feels restricted and uninspired if he is bounded to just architecture. During the process, his area of interests is broaden, and believes that a good designer has to be an all-rounder, being able to explore design fundamentals and brainstorm for creative ideas and apply these ideas into different design aspects. Hence he tries out different design works and continues to learn. To him, there is no difference between architecture, interior design and product design. They are all DESIGN and inter-related with each others.

He believes design is only valuable if we do something different from others.

WINTER ARRIVES STOOLS
We remember the fascination with the layers of fresh snow on items left outdoors when we wake up on a winter’s morning. But papa said not to sit on them as it would get us wet and cold. A ladder, sled, and garden stool are the form inspiration for this series. Material: Powder-coated mild steel and upholstered foam.

ERASER USB STICK
A “toy” in our pencil case, we used to have improvised fun playing with our blue and white erasers or skewering them with pins or staple bullets. This iconic shape of the classic blue-and-white is felt in this USB key with an irony in form (erase) and function (write data).

Brian Ling – The Un-p3 Project

Posted by Porro on 11.20.07 | Permalink | 8 Comments

unp3-haptic1.jpg

The Un-p3 project is an experimental Industrial Design Project that explores the idea of combining a very craft based manufacturing approach with a very mass manufacturing type product, in this case a simple Mp3 player. The project also explores the idea of “Haptic” design, where tactile elements of the material and the form give the user an additional dimension in his/her appreciation of the design.

unp3-fabio2.jpg
The Wave Un-p3 concept was created using a STL rapid-prototyping machine. The distinct waves form a unique button system that is very difficult to repeat under a mass manufacturing conditions.

unp3-haptic.jpg
The Haptic Un-p3 uses laser cut plywood to give its very unique spiral effect. The idea is that as the product ages, the patina of the wood creates a product that has a very customized feel allowing the user to really own the product.

About the Designer
Brian currently lurks in Sydney and Singapore. During the day he is the Head of Industrial Design at a consumer electronics company. At night, he blogs, changes his son’s diaper, dabbles in design entrepreneurship, and swings from building to building righting wrongs.

For more information on his experimental and strategic industrial design work do check out his website Design Sojourn.
